Having teeth removed

Before you have any impressions taken, your dentist will need to assess the condition of your mouth to pick the most suitable course of treatment for you. Your dentist will speak to you about whether you need to have any teeth removed before you can get fitted for your dentures. If you do, you will then need to allow time for your gums to heal, which varies depending on how many teeth you are having taken out.

If you are getting any remaining teeth removed, you may have the option of getting immediate dentures. If you do get immediate dentures, you will be able to wear them during the healing time, but as your gums heal the dentures may need to be relined or readjusted for a better fit.

Having impressions taken

To make sure your dentures have the best fit, your dentist will need to take measurements and impressions of your mouth. You may need to have more impressions done so that finer adjustments can be made, but this is what the dental technician will initially build your new denture from.

Choosing your new teeth

You’ll most likely want your dentures to look like your natural teeth, so it may be worth taking an old picture with you to show your dentist. Together with your dentist you will be able to decide on the colour, shade and shape of the dentures, bases and teeth, ensuring they are the best match for you.

The fitting stage

Once you’ve had your impressions done and decided on their colour and shape, your dentures will be created and you can have your first fitting. You will be able to try your new dentures on and see how they look, fit and feel. Speak with your dentist about whether they are comfortable and fit well, and they'll will be able to make any required adjustments.

Having regular check-ups

Once you have your new dentures, it’s important to have regular check-ups with your dentist so you can discuss any problems or discomfort you have. They will be able to help and offer you advice. From start to finish, getting dentures can take quite a few months, so speak with your dentist if you have any concerns.
It’s important to take care of your dentures just as you would your natural teeth. You can do this by establishing a thorough cleaning routine and storing your dentures correctly when you’re not wearing them – looking after your dentures will help them last longer and will allow you to continue enjoying life as you should.
